The Edit What to Wear to Royal Ascot 2026A complete enclosure-by-enclosure guide. By Reliked 21 May 2026 |
Royal Ascot returns on Tuesday 16 June – Saturday 20 June 2026, and with it the most scrutinised dress code in the British summer calendar. Five days, four enclosures, one immovable rule: dress for where you're sitting, not where you wish you were.
This year's Royal Ascot Handbook has, for the first time, named an official Colour of the Year: Bright Tomato. A confident, vivid scarlet, set to lead the parade ring across all five days under the creative direction of Daniel Fletcher. Editorial silhouettes for 2026 lean into chiffon, tulle, organza and silk — fluid, light, and softly draped, with graceful asymmetry where the dress code allows it.
The good news: you don't need to buy something new for a single afternoon at Berkshire. Half the most photographed wardrobes in the Royal Enclosure last year were preloved — Beulah London worn once for a christening, Self-Portrait midi from someone's hen do, vintage Saloni still with the tags. Those wardrobes are exactly what ends up on Reliked.
Here's a full guide to the Royal Ascot 2026 dress code, broken down by enclosure — with real, in-stock pieces from the site to match each, vetted strictly against the published rules.
Royal Ascot 2026 dates and key days
- Tuesday 16 June — Opening day. Queen Anne Stakes.
- Wednesday 17 June — Prince of Wales's Stakes.
- Thursday 18 June — Ladies' Day. The most scrutinised dress code day of the lot. Gold Cup runs.
- Friday 19 June — Coronation Stakes.
- Saturday 20 June — Diamond Jubilee Stakes. Closing day, usually the dressiest of the week.
If you're going on a single day and want to lean into the full Ascot wardrobe, Ladies' Day or Saturday are the dressiest. Tuesday and Wednesday allow a slightly softer register.
The Royal Enclosure: dress code, decoded
The Royal Enclosure is Ascot's strictest. The dress code is published and policed — stewards turn people away at the gate every year for getting it wrong. Women require a formal day dress or trouser suit with a hemline just above the knee or longer; straps must be at least one inch wide, with no strapless, halter neck, off-the-shoulder, bardot, or spaghetti styles permitted. A hat with a base of at least four inches is required — fascinators are not allowed in the Royal Enclosure. Trouser suits must be full-length and of matching colour and material. Men wear black or grey morning dress with waistcoat and top hat.
The obvious Royal Enclosure starting point on site is the Beulah London Cream Floral Quilted Marcia Dress (£295) — Beulah London is the Princess of Wales's go-to Ascot label, and the Marcia checks every published rule: long sleeves, quilted needlecord bodice, soft floral, knee-length. If pastel is the register, the Self-Portrait Blue Floral Watercolour Puff Sleeve Taffeta Midi (£165) reads like a Vogue lookbook page — puff sleeves, square neck, soft watercolour floral. For the dress code in a single buy, the Cappelli Condici Green Occasion Three-Piece Set (£265) includes the matching hat alongside its bolero and dress — sleeves and the four-inch rule resolved in one. And for the wide-leg trouser-suit route editors are flagging in 2026, build the look around the Holland Cooper Oyster White Linen Blazer (£345) paired with matching linen trousers.

The Queen Anne Enclosure: formal, but with a little more breathing room
The Queen Anne (formerly the Grandstand) is the second-most formal enclosure — and where the bulk of the seriously-dressed crowd actually sit. A dress, skirt and top, or trouser suit is required, with hemlines of modest length. Hats or fascinators are welcomed. One-shoulder, halter and bardot necklines are permitted here (unlike the Royal Enclosure), but strapless and spaghetti strap styles are discouraged. Men wear a full-length suit, shirt, and tie.
The Queen Anne is the section to lean into 2026's Bright Tomato story. The first pick is the All Saints Red Katlyn Long Sleeve Stretch Maxi (£21) — Bright Tomato in a long-sleeve maxi cut, the value pick of the section and properly covered. For the same colour with a tailored register, the Karen Millen Red Tailored Pleated Panel Midaxi (£24) brings pleated panels and modest tailoring. For something quietly editorial, the byTIMO Birds Printed Crépe Satin Puff Sleeve Midi (£135) brings the English-garden print energy. And the Polo Ralph Lauren Flower Puff Sleeve Midi (£125) reads exactly the right Ralph-at-the-races register.

The Village Enclosure: smart, but you're allowed to enjoy it
The Village Enclosure was introduced in 2017 and is the friendliest of the formal enclosures. There's still a dress code — a smart dress, skirt and top, jumpsuit, or trouser suit; no denim; a hat or fascinator should be worn — but it's pitched closer to a smart summer wedding than a Royal Enclosure parade ring. Strappy and slightly shorter hemlines are allowed, within reason. Men wear a jacket and trousers, shirt, and tie.
The Village dresses for proper summer-races energy: the LoveShackFancy Pink Polka Dot Maxi (£119) does the ruffled-vintage thing the label is known for — pink polka dot, maxi length, immediate parade-ring polish. The Hobbs Pastel Yellow Acacia Silk Dress (£62) brings the heritage-Ascot register in a soft buttercup silk. For the high-street alternative, the Nobody's Child Blue Symran Puff Sleeve Midi (£79) has puff sleeves and a panelled waist in cornflower blue. And for anyone leaning tea-dress rather than tailored, the Faithful The Brand Blue Floral Shirred Bodice Midi (£46) is the gentle lined-floral option.

The Windsor Enclosure: where the dress code relaxes
The Windsor is the most relaxed enclosure at Royal Ascot, with no formal dress code — though smart dress is encouraged. Most people still arrive in a midi dress and either a fascinator or no headwear at all. The mood is "summer wedding guest" rather than parade ring. Anything from our Village picks works, plus jumpsuits, two-pieces, and slightly looser silhouettes the other enclosures wouldn't allow. The rule is: dress smart enough that you don't look out of place at the gate, comfortable enough that you can still walk the course by the third race.
A note on hats, shoes, and the small stuff
Hats: the Royal and Queen Anne Enclosures both expect a proper hat — the Royal demands a four-inch base. Fascinators are fine in the Village and Windsor but won't get you through the Royal Enclosure gate. We've stocked occasion-sets with a matching hat included (look for the Cappelli Condici sets currently on site); for standalone hats, plan to source from a specialist millinery.
Shoes: mid-heels carry the day. Six hours on grass is a long time in stilettos, and most Royal Ascot regulars switch to a block heel or kitten by the third race. Bring a pair of fold-up flats in a clutch.
Bags: clutches and small structured top-handles only. No oversized totes, and the Royal Enclosure has bag-size restrictions at the gate (think A4 or smaller).
Weather: June at Ascot is unpredictable. A long-line linen blazer (see the Holland Cooper above) or a slim pashmina handles a sudden cool snap without ruining the silhouette.
The Reliked rule for Royal Ascot
Every piece in this guide has been worn before — once, twice, sometimes never at all but with the tags still attached. The wardrobes you're shopping belonged to people who go to Royal Ascot, sit in the enclosures, get the dress code right. That's the entire point of preloved: a piece does its second turn in your wardrobe instead of someone's wishlist.
